Judiciary Offers Free Seminar On Wills, Trusts, And Estate Planning

The Hawai`i State Judiciary is sponsoring a free public informational session, "Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning," from noon to 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in the Supreme Court Conference Room, 417 South King Street.

Attorney Patricia Lee will discuss legal points to consider when developing wills and trusts and give an overview of estate planning.  She has been a trust and estates lawyer with Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel for more than 20 years.  A graduate of the University of Hawai`i Richardson School of Law, Lee is co-author of the Hawai`i Wills & Trusts Sourcebook.  She is a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and has been listed in every edition of The Best Lawyers in America since 1995.

Sponsored by the Judiciary, the "Lunch 'n' Learn the Law" program is a series of free informational seminars for the general public that feature topics relating to specific areas of the law and the courts.  Volunteer presenters include judges, attorneys, court officials, and other subject-matter experts.

  Did You Know?

A "Living Trust" can be used to hold legal title to and provide a mechanism to manage your property

You can select a person or or a group of people to serve as the Trustee. They then carry out the instructions you want in the Trust and name one or more Successor Trustees to take over should you no longer be able to. Unlike a Will, a Trust generally goes into effect immediately, functions throughout your lifetime even if you become incapacitated, and continues even after your death. Most Trusts are revocable meaning that the person who creates the Trust can make modifications or terminate the Trust in the future.
